Submission Guidelines

Deadline:

December 31, 2022. Winners will be announced at the end of February 2023, with awards conferred at a ceremony in late March.

 

Prizes:

There will be a first prize of $10,000 and two runner-up prizes of $1,000 each.

Criteria:

The Pierre Sprey Award is intended to foster the tradition of clear-thinking and courageous inquiry of journalism that engages with the political economy of the U.S. military-industrial complex. In keeping with the spirit of Sprey’s legacy, the Award recognizes work that furthers public understanding of the need to reform our nation’s military establishment and the industrial-congressional complex that feeds off it.

 

Entries will be judged on their quality, originality, insight, analysis, and writing/composition. 

 

Eligibility:

We invite published entries from newspapers, magazines, wire services, and online journalistic publications. Works that include visual or audio elements are eligible.

 

Questions of eligibility will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

 

Multiple Entries: Individuals may submit only one entry, in addition to being part of no more than one team (multiple-authored) entry. Outlets (e.g., newspapers, magazines, online publications) may submit no more than three entries.

 

How to Submit:

Entries must be submitted by December 31, 2022 via email to [address]. Entries must include a .PDF of the original published work as well as a hyperlink (if applicable). Please submit only one file. To facilitate review, please ensure that entries are not “paywalled.” If this is not possible, provide alternate means for reviewers to access the online version of the submitted work (e.g., login credentials). Please use the subject line “Sprey Award Submission” followed by the last name of the lead author. In the body of the submission email, please include the full name, title, publication, publication date, and author contact information (telephone number, permanent email address, and mailing address).

 

Entrants will be sent a questionnaire, which must be completed and returned by January 15, 2023.
